How to test in 3 steps
- 1
Click "Turn on camera"
The browser asks for camera permission. Choose Allow. The image is only shown on your own device.
- 2
Check the image and the numbers
Is there an image at all? Is it dark, noisy, blurry or off-color? Check the real resolution under the frame.
- 3
Take a test photo
Click Take a test photo to inspect a still frame. Sharpness and color are easier to judge than on live video.
Reading the results
- Clear image, natural colors, 1280x720 or more: normal camera. Ordinary laptop webcams are all at this level, do not expect phone quality.
- No device listed even after allowing access: the camera is switched off by a hotkey, disabled in BIOS or Device Manager, or has a broken cable. On a used laptop ask the seller to enable it in front of you.
- Completely black image but a device is listed: the privacy shutter is closed, or the sensor is dead.
- Lines, flicker or a purple cast: cable fault through the hinge. Repairable, but the display assembly has to come apart.
- Milky or hazy image: a scratched lens or a protective film that was never removed. Wipe it with a soft cloth.
Notes for used laptops
- Test the microphone too: many buyers only discover a dead mic during their first video call. Go to the microphone test right after this.
- If the laptop has Windows Hello face login, try setting it up in Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options. The infrared camera can fail while the normal webcam still works.
- For study or remote work, business-class laptops with a 720p webcam and a privacy shutter are the safest bet, and the used laptop checklist covers everything else to check.
Frequently asked questions
I turned the camera on but nothing shows+
Check in this order: 1) a physical privacy shutter or slider; 2) a camera kill switch (usually Fn + an F-key with a camera icon); 3) in Windows, Settings → Privacy → Camera must allow the browser; 4) another app such as Zoom or Teams is using the camera.
The browser says "Permission denied"+
You blocked camera access earlier. Click the lock or camera icon in the address bar, choose Allow and reload the page.
It shows 640x480. Is the camera bad?+
Most laptop webcams are 720p (1280x720). 640x480 can mean the camera tops out there or that the browser picked a low mode. The tool asks for the highest mode available, so the number shown is close to what the camera can really do.
The image is dark and grainy+
Laptop webcams are weak in low light, so noise in a dim room is normal. Face a window or a lamp and compare. If it stays completely black in good light the sensor has failed.
The image has lines, stutters, or a purple or green cast+
A failing camera cable running through the hinge, common on used laptops that have been opened and closed a lot. Gently move the lid with the camera on: if the image changes, it is the cable.
Does the tool store or upload my image?+
No. The image is shown only in your browser, and test photos live in temporary memory until you close the page. There is no server receiving data.
